Businesses are increasingly becoming aware that energy efficiency will not only reduce their green house gas emissions, but also save them money. The scale of energy efficiency in the workplace can range from changing computer settings to switch to energy saving mode when not in use, through to whole building intelligent lighting systems that turn on / off depending on whether an office is occupied.

Here are some tips on improving energy efficiency in the workplace:

  • use energy efficient appliances and ensure they are well maintained
  • educate staff to switch off appliances and lights when not in use
  • ensure the heating and cooling system is set to the manufacturers recommendations
  • use energy efficient lighting, reduce levels where appropriate and make use of natural light where possible
  • install variable speed drives where possible
  • reclaim wasted heat from large refrigeration systems to heat water for offices, toilets and change rooms
